Default NLP Training 3 - Key NLP Skills - With Michael Beale

Transcript - Draft

Liam : What are some of the key skills and attitudes needed to be good at NLP?

Michael : I think that one of the key skills of NLP is, actually, just letting go and shutting up. It's about not having to many thoughts or ideas in my mind so I just let everything soak in, so I can actually interpret what you're saying without having too many of my thoughts on it?

Liam : OK. And what is the Meta Model?

Michael : The Meta Model actually runs quite well to what I was saying. The Meta Model was where Bandler and Grinder modelled Fritz Perlz, Erickson and Virginia Satir, and they came up with this questioning system, and came up with questions based on their language. The really good thing about these questions is that by asking them it gets to what may be under your consciousness and brings it up to your consciousness.

By asking very simple questions based on your language you're able to understand whether you've deleted things or if you've left things out, if you've made assumptions that aren't quite true or if you've made generalisations. The important part about that, as I say, is that you take what is just below your consciousness and raise it up - and when that happens you'll find that some issues or problems you had do disappear.

Liam : OK, and what is The Milton Model?

Michael : Curiously the Milton Model is almost the opposite. The Milton Model is coming up with a structure of language that has direction but very little content. One of the delightful things about the human brain is that if you're listening to me and interested in what I'm saying and I give you a structure with very little content - you put your own content onto that structure.

What's interesting is that if that's your content it will actually start to make sense to you. And what that means is being aware of unlocking your own creativity. I'm not interfering with your creativity, I'm giving you a structure and a direction so that you can use for something useful to you - but actually you fill in the details.

It's a structure of language that poets use, that politicians use, that salespeople use, that as I say, has the ability to unlock creativity.

Liam : Is there anything else that is particularly important?

Michael : Attitudes I think is a really interesting one, which we've covered before but not in this particular segment. To me useful attitudes are; curiosity, because if I'm curious I will come across as being interested in you. Tenacity is really important, because if you have an issue and you're tenacious enough then you're not going to give up until you find an answer.

Something else about NLP - it's not that it's instant or that it's mystical, but it's that state where if we're working together to solve something there will always be an answer. And it's just a matter of working through those things until we find that answer and that way of thinking.

Liam : Michael Beale, thank you.

Michael : Thank you.
