  2. Default NLP Training 4 - States and Beliefs - With Michael Beale

    Transcript - Draft

    Liam : So Michael, what would you say are some of the key states to have in NLP?

    Michael : I think that all states can be good states. I think that it's important for people to come up with big lists of states that are useful, because even states that may appear not to be useful - take anger or being pissed off - you can actually use them as leverage when you're not motivated, and you can use them as motivation.

    So in the right context I think that probably every state has a use. It's not about doing it for too long, or if it's not in the right context. Particular states that are useful are things like curiosity, interest, tenacity.

    There's a lovely set of three states from a hypnosis course that I was on a few years ago that actually said if somebody has a problem that they were missing one of three states, three energies.

    And those are;

    Tenderness - because sometimes people become devoid from reality and they need to inject a bit of tenderness.
    Fierceness - Or a strong state - because sometimes people go around in circles and they need a push.
    And sometimes playfulness - Because sometimes we get too serious and having some playfulness helps us to unlock some creativity or helps us to learn.

    Liam : OK. What are some of the key beliefs to have?

    Michael : Useful beliefs. Firstly I'd like to belief that things that are true are true. This is a useful belief - I don't want to have beliefs that are untrue because that could have all sorts of problems or consequences

    Sometimes in life we do not know if things are true or not. And views like "Am I going to be successful? It might take me some work, but in the end I'm going to get what I want." I think is a useful belief. Because if I don't believe that I'm going to be successful, than I'm probably not going to try.

    So any belief that gets me to try, that gets me to be positive, gets me to work in a useful direction, are tremendously useful.

    Liam : Is there anything else that you think is particularly important that you'd care to emphasise or repeat?

    Michael : I'd like to emphasise with States and Beliefs that it's important for me if I'm working with somebody that I need to be aware of my states and beliefs, because I don't want to interfere with, or get int eh way of my own performance as a coach or as a trainer. But also to be aware of some of the beliefs of some of the people that I was working with.

    Then again if somebody has an issue or a problem, it is something that they are doing themselves to hold onto that problem. Therefore if I can help them find the right states and beliefs I might help them find a very easy way of moving on from what they might have thought was an issue.

    Liam : Michael Beale, thank you.

    Michael : Thank you.
