Question Transderivational Search

Minds have a back office that search through memory files for that person's name who you cant remember or the name of a song that is on the tip of your tongue.

My question is how to effectively and purposely switch this off. Say in meditation, or just having a clear mind, you want all the resources to take a rest. You dont want to have a part of your mind running errands in TDS.

Any tips here?

Default Transderivational Search

Hi Jim,

Interesting point,

I think my response is simply yes! and you're right, mediatation is a way of quitening background thinking.

(There is also Richards mantra of repeatedly saying 'Shut the f*** up to yourself in a commanding voice a number of times).

For those that want a simple approach to meditation I've added a new post on meditation.

Be aware that when some people meditate for the first time they become more aware of their internal 'noise' and its a bit uncomfortable at first. This can be part of the proccess which will result in it decreasing.

Any more thoughts?

Re switching it off: practice. (I love Richard's take on it too!)

I would also add that it depends on what you think meditation is, what type of meditation you're using and what you're doing it for...

Thanks for all your replies.

I will meditate on it. I have done lots of meditation and now working on "moving" meditation. We live in a world of action, so how to develop one mindedness? I treat caring for my bonsai plants and knife sharpening as meditation. If you ever get a chance, go to the fish market in Tokyo and see the masters there engage in knife sharpening. They are definitely in a trance.
